CM Eric Bottcher: Resolution to require SCHOOLS to provide Cycling Education to Students

CM Bottcher makes much of a resolution to require schools to provide classes on proper cycling conduct. At best this is a sad recognition that the behavior of cyclists is out of control. First and foremost enforcement by the NYPD has been restrained by the city since Mayor Bloomberg. Enforcement is the backbone of a responsible bike culture. This was not only not authentically attempted it was opposed by cycling advocates. The result is that the lawless conditions on the streets and sidewalks has only grown more dangerous. Further even if children are given instruction in school-until and unless the behavior of older cyclists is lawabiding the young cyclists are likely to adapt their behavior according to the examples they see exhibited by adults. https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/FMfcgzGsmWxxMqdxkQzWjLmsRgBWkqCM

A Group of Responsible Cyclists*** Gary Baumgarten

Veteran Radio Journalist And Street photographer captures a group of law abiding cyclists-----From Cleveland. This is something you don’t often see in New York City. A group of bicyclists, using the bike lane and patiently waiting for the light to turn green. When I pointed this out to them one guy said, “That’s what we do where we are all from.” “Where’s that?” I inquired. “Cleveland.” Ahh. That explains it. Culver City California ** decides to rip up bike lanes

Culver City California has opted to allow traffic to move more freely and cylcing to assume a less conspicuous lane. Here in New York the severe congestion is in large measure due to the bike infrastructure. Lanes to give a disproportionate share of the road to cycling and the bike racks and quiet zones to reduce parking. There might be no need for congestion pricing if there were less bike amenities. Electric vehicles will address pollution concerns. If there had been an environmental impact study there should have been a more rational approach to accomodating bicycles-scooters-E-bikes etc. More law abiding. Less chaos and mayhem. https://www.foxla.com/news/culver-city-council-votes-eliminate-protected-bike-bus-lanes
