Letter to New York Mag 2011 from Jack Brown
This letter was in response to an article in New York Magazine-2011.
Piece by Boston writer Shaer-where he intentionally misquoted me.
My response attempts to set the record straight.****** Subject: Not Quite Copenhagen

The piece "Not Quite Copenhagen" quotes me boldly but neglects to identify me as the Spokesman(no pun intended) for the community organization "Coalition Against Rogue Riding." CARR advocates an evenhanded enforcement of the motor vehicle laws so as to manage the epidemic of scofflaw cycling and move the city toward a responsible bike culture.I did not tell the fact checker that 9-11 was "equivalent "to Bike Bedlam. I said it was "similar but different". I ended by saying the city was doing nothing about it. Hence the two wheeled greenery was an "exercise in zealotry." Mr. Shaer was at a loss as to why the bike anarchy was a problem until he spoke with me.He sidesteps the undue influence of radical advocacy group Transportation Alternatives that has imposed a callous disregard for public safety on the city. He concludes that cyclists need to obey the laws.Hey fellow cyclist that's a lame revelation.Until the NYPD is taken off the short leash of minimal quotas and until the businesses that employ the dangerous working cyclists are "vicariously liable" there is little likelihood that the streets and sidewalks will be civil and lawabiding. You have this administration- headstrong- and operating with a sense of moral and pragmatic superiority to thank for that..
