NYPD pursuit of scofflaw Ci Bike rider ends in collision in EV

July 6,2019   In the NInth Pct a NYPD squad car observing a Ci Bike rider violating the law multiple times pursued the rider from First Ave to Ave A by Tompkins Square Park. A collision resulted. The bike wedged between the squad car and a parked vehicle. The officer explains in the video why the rider was pursued. The rider ignored the NYPD's direction to stop. This resulted in a less than elegant stop. However it is illustrative of a number of things. A**the sense of impunity on the part of the rider. The irresponsible bike culture that has been enabled over decades from a lack of a cooperative effort and significantly-ENFORCEMENT- is here being manifest and addressed. We note the rider appears to NOT have been wearing a helmet. Perhaps wearing a helmet would both provide protection for the rider and make a rider more mindful that there is a two way responsibility on the road. There is NO regulation requiring helmet use on Ci Bikes. An oversight? No this was strenuously opposed by bike advocates because it would decrease ridership. Well now patriots-who needs riders like this scofflaw on the road? As the officer states the rider was being stopped for his own protection-and not incidentally that of pedestrians and motorists. GOOD WORK NYPD. We commend the officer and CO of the Ninth Pct John McConnell.
